I looked at the screenshots, and I hate to say it, but.... I'm not impressed. I don't like the way the menu looks at all. I don't mind a lighter file manager though.

I tend to agree although I am a long term gnome user. Installed the Kubuntu version and it has a fairly unpolished feel to it at present. The menus are not nice to use and some of the configuration tools are still buggy. For example changing themes takes a long time and crashes at times and they are generally rather unappealing. The gnome desktop in Ubuntu seems a fair bit snappier with several tasks. I guess one should not be too critical as it is 4.0.0 but it felt rushed out the door..... Edit: Also it screwed up my qt4 settings in gnome which was rather irritating. |

I just posted the story, but you were all aware that todays release was a developers release and not the stable public release right?

I did the same and I agree, it needs a lot of polishing and maturing. They are on the right track though and it will only get better. I had similar problems with changing themes among other issue. Like you said, it is 4 release.
I agree, they shouldn't have released it with the "Kickoff menu", they should have released it with "Tasty Menu" instead. It is a day & night difference. Lot more mature with better presentation and functionality. See it here [HYPERLINK@www.notmart.org] Download it from here [HYPERLINK@www.kde-apps.org] |

> I just posted the story, but you were all aware that todays release was a developers release and not the stable public release right? Yeah that is the impression when using it but this page [HYPERLINK@www.kde.org] hypes it a lot and downplays the beta aspect of it which I don't think all that wise. There was a lot of discussion on this point on kde blogs and my impression was that the developers wanted to go this risky route because they wanted really wide testing. |
