What app should I (its for a friend, the Colonel doesn't use those kind of things) use to convert iTunes movies to .avi? |

Plain old ffmpeg? It really depends on whether the iTunes movies are DRMed or not. |

VLC puts a nice GUI to the process. It goes in as one file type and comes out as another. Personally though I usually have good luck with CLI and mencoder. |
