Myself and another Linux devotee have been debating this set of figures and if there are any answers to the questions below, we'd like to know.

1. The stats show that 1% still run Windows. Why ? In the light of the "better than 9/10ths running Linux/Unix" one gets the feeling that using Windows on a supercomputer seems to be a either a backward step or stay with the devil you know.

2. The figures don't add up. There is about 4% unaccounted. What is this group running ?

Ridcully there are still the odds that there are RYO's out there, and in the list of UNIX, were BSD's included?

@Ridiculy: Easy.

1) People use supercomputers to do things, not just to beat benchmarks. There's probably some software out there in supercomputer land that still needs Windows HPC to run.

2) That 4% is BSD (0.2%) and mixed systems. This is when there are several OSes working in tandem. E.g. a custom OS to communicate between nodes and Linux to run the software that does the hard work. Have a look at the original stats here: http://www.top500.org/stats/list/35/osfam

Thanks everybody........One of the nicest things about LXer debating/comments threads is the courtesy that is extended to everybody and the genuine desire to help. There are other sites (no names, no courtmartials) where comments are savaged and personal attacks rule the day.........Again.......thanks. :-)

Ridcully,

Quoting: [...] [questions are treated with] courtesy that is extended to everybody and the genuine desire to help. There are other [places] where [questioners] are savaged and personal attacks rule the day...
Just a bit of advice, stay away from the Debian help forum on those days.
