alternative download services for free software projects?

this is rather disturbing.
i want no part in it. where can free software projects now turn to host downloads? github et al. only offer code hosting. greetings, eMBee. |

That's a very good question, and I don't have a good answer. The best site I've been able to find is filehippo.com, but it seems to be rather selective in what it takes. None of the old standbys seem to be any good any more (cnet, zdnet, tucows, etc.). |

Think about the source control system written by Linus Torvalds... If only there were a central HUB where you could put put your code so others could GIT at it... |

The problem with hosting such a service yourself is, of course, the bandwidth requirements. Most people simply can't afford the bandwidth costs. Now, if you could get a large group of people together and aggregate their bandwidth for the purposes of hosting open source software downloads, that might be doable. There's even software already existing which allows for exactly that: bittorrent. Then you'd merely need a site listing the software and hosting the torrent files. Whether it's feasible or not I couldn't say. |
