The most visceral way to learn about syscalls is to install the Net Assembler along with GDB and get to work with a few simple programs... running and pausing in gdb... checking registers... and watching the wheels turn... until the inevitable writing past the end of memory.

Ahhh! I love asm.

I'm still looking for a good IDE to use for assembly on Linux... And a few good libraries,... It's been about 2 years since I did any assembly programming...
