Review: Linux Mint MATE 201204
It's almost good enough to make me want to keep it, but a few minor gripes continue to hold it back slightly for my own use. Nevertheless, it's awesome!
FOLLOW-UP: How-To: Get My Desktop with MATE in Ubuntu
I found out how to install and use Compiz 0.8.6 in MATE in Ubuntu 11.10 "Oneiric Ocelot", and I'm using a different GTK+ theme now. So now I have my old desktop back, for real this time!
Revisited: Linux Mint (KDE), Chakra, Fuduntu
After a bit more testing, unless I can basically fully replicate my old desktop with Linux Mint & MATE, I think I'll go with Linux Mint & KDE when Linux Mint 13 LTS "M[...]a" comes out.
Review: Cinnamon 1.4
It's pretty good, and it's definitely quite a bit better than MGSE (and way better than GNOME 3/Shell), but it's still missing a few things that keep me with GNOME 2/MATE.

Review: Bridge Linux 2012.2 Xfce + KDE + GNOME
The Xfce edition is definitely the most promising, but the lack of a GUI package manager and installer somewhat hamper it. At least in the live session, the KDE edition was faulty, while the GNOME edition didn't let me use Cinnamon.

I keep reviewing [formerly] Arch-based Chakra with KDE, but this is the first time I'm trying Arch-based KahelOS with GNOME. I'm happy to say that it measures up to the positively awesome Chakra.

It seemed like such a promising distribution especially after the split from Fedora, but one huge crash in the live session caused by an attempted LibreOffice installation brought it all crashing down.

In some specific spots, it's still quite rough around the edges, but if those problem areas are judiciously avoided, considering how new it is, it's a great lightweight KDE-esque environment.

Pear OS is a younger project, and unlike Zorin OS which merely provides a similar interface, Pear OS tries to ape another proprietary OS fully, so of course it falls a bit short of its goals.

It does everything I want it to do and more. Aside from Linux Mint, I haven't found another distribution for which I can say that. Awesome!
Review: VectorLinux 7.0 Standard Gold
Based on its slowness, cryptic errors, and difficulty in installing some applications, this is probably better for intermediate users, but that seems to be the target audience, so VectorLinux does a fine job.
Review: Linux Mint 12 "Lisa" GNOME + MATE
The Linux Mint developers have done it! They've actually made GNOME 3 pleasant. That said, I still miss a few things from it, so I'm glad MATE is there; better yet, MATE turned out to be just as stable as GNOME 2.X.
Review: openSUSE 12.1 GNOME + KDE
Most things (apart from the usual newer versions of programs) have stayed the same or improved since version 11.4...except apparently for hardware support, which can be a dealbreaker (and was for me).
Review: Pinguy OS 11.10 Beta
It actually does a really good job of making GNOME 3 "Pinguy-ish", and it's quite a bit more usable than stock GNOME 3. The rest of it is the same Pinguy OS I've come to know and love.
