Indy 500 Qualifying, Stephan’s Injury, and Tux500

Due to concern over the effect of Stephan Gregoire’s injury in yesterday’s practice session and how it may affect our participation in the Indianapolis 500 on Sunday, May 27, we thought it would be helpful to clarify the qualifying procedure for the race and explain why there is little reason for concern regarding our participation as a result of this incident.

I just got off the phone with Ted Woerner of Acceleration Marketing, and I'm floored. Stephan suffered a broken vertebra in his crash this afternoon. This is a very sad day.

Tux500: Gregoire Appears to Be OK After Practice Crash

Stephan Gregoire, driver of the Linux-sponsored car in this year's Indianapolis 500, climbed from the car under his own power this afternoon, after hitting the wall in the short chute between turns 1 and 2. The rear end of the car appeared to get loose and swing around as he entered turn 1, and although he was nearly able to save it, the rear of the car made contact and slid down the wall.

Intentions Clarified - Battle Lines Drawn

It has been a wild day for friends of FOSS. This past weekend was the opening of qualifications for this year's Indianapolis 500 race; a venue where Linux can introduce itself to much of the world. 22 cars are now qualified, and 11 spots remain open in the field. Today also marks the beginning of active warfare on the Open Source community by none other than Microsoft.

I've been at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, covering action for Tux500 for the last several days. I've seen the crowd that is walking around the garage area, the crowd that is milling around on Pit Lane, the fan that is sitting in the stands. I'm here observing the reaction to Tux and to Linux.

Tux 500 Program Breaks $10,000 Funding Threshold

With just under a week before the official opening of practice for the 91st running of the Indianapolis 500, the Tux 500 Linux marketing program has now received over $10,000 in contributions from the global Linux open source community. As testimony that the popularity of the event extends well outside the borders of the United States, contributions to the innovative marketing program have arrived from twenty-eight different nations and contribution totals from outside the U.S. exceed those from within the U.S.

Tux Takes His Place on Chastain Motorsports Indy Car

Tux, the cherubic penguin mascot of the Linux computer operating system has just taken up residence on the front nose of the Chastain Motorsports Panoz / Honda Indy car. Driver, Stephan Gregoire, and team owner, Tom Chastain, applied the ceremonial first decal yesterday to the distinctive two-tone blue, 225 mph Indy racer that Gregoire will pilot for this year’s 91st running of the famed Indianapolis 500 mile race on May 27, 2007.
