Why Google funds open source development?

This is the question I've asked to the GNOME's marketing-list this morning. 31 minutes later (midnight in Mountain View - California) we got the response from Chris DiBona, Open Source Program Manager at Google Inc. and responsible of Google's Summer of Code:

XGI Targets OSS Drivers - 3d oss driver for Xmas

[Ed: if will be true i will vote with my xmas pocket , lookout nvidia, ati] "As we celebrate this Thanksgiving Day here in the United States, there is an additional place in our hearts for the talented folks over at XGI Technology. Unlike XGI's earlier attempt at opening up their 2D FBDev source-code to the general public, which hadn't gained much support due to the lack of 3D code, they have begun to take a new position on their software. As many OSS enthusiasts could have only dreamed about, by as early as next month XGI is targeting at possibly releasing their complete source-code for the Volari 8300 to the open-source community. Read more in this Phoronix exclusive."

Using Lazarus to demystify Linux.

For the past four years, I have been the Chief Software Architect for OpenLab international, the company that created the OpenLab GNU/Linux distribution. Over that period, Lazarus has long been included in the distribution, but what fewer people realize is how critical it is to the actual distribution development. Read on for some insight into how we use it."

How to spin statistics - Microsoft way

Info-Tech Research Group reports Microsoft could lose as much as 10% of its mid-sized business customers to Linux, in its best markets, over just the next three years. Sounds really bad for Microsoft, doesn’t it? That’s not how the story was reported.

Welcome to the Java Melodrama Show!

Today's headlines in the Java world herald the arrival of nothing less than a new era in Java ... licensing. The latest announcements from the innovative leaders in both proprietary and open source software license production, have been brought to the general blogging public today via a widely reported teleconference. Sun announced that they will announce yet another license for their source code later, maybe. In the long standing tradition of sweet license names like "scuzzle" or "cuddle", the new license will be pronounced "jewel", and written as JIUL. So what's wrong with the current license, SCSL, cuddly nicknamed scuzzle and a jewel in Sun's crown? Hailed by Sun on its arrival back in 1998 as a blend of the best aspects of the proprietary and Open Source license models, the license failed to gain support, and has been widely debunked as as far from being open source as it gets without explicitely writing a license that violates each and every clause of the OSI definition.

EDS' vice-president of Global Alliances, Robb Rasmussen, this week launched an extraordinary attack on the open source software. At an event in Sydney to spruik the benefits of the so-called EDS Agility Alliance -- a grouping of vendors which have nominated as preferred suppliers of their speciality technologies to the services company -- Rasmussen claimed that Linux had issues with security, scalability and a potential to splinter in the same way as Unix did.

Linux is insecure, unscalable

Large enterprises should not use Linux because it is not secure enough, has scalability problems and could fork into many different flavours, according to the Agility Alliance, which includes IT heavyweights EDS, Fuji Xerox, Cisco, Microsoft, Sun, Dell and EMC
