If you have ever spoken passionately about a favorite operating system, computer, technology or other tech topic on an online discussion board, the chances are good that you're among those that have been labeled a "zealot." Tarential submitted the following editorial to osOpinion/osViews which suggests that the term is being thrown about too flippantly on some online discussion boards... especially with regard to discussion relating to free/open source software.

'Computer Market share.' This is one of the most misunderstood and misapropriated terms in the computer industry. All too often, journalists mis-use the term when they are speaking of a computer's install-base. As a result, the public is led to believe that certain computing platforms are significantly less popular than what is actually true. Unfortunately, many consumers take this as truth, and then base their purchasing decision on the miss-information. osRadio spoke with Jeffrey Hewitt of Gartner research to offer some clarity to this growing problem. Adding Linux to Corporate Networks Is Harder Than You Think

Though there may be several Linux software technologies that rival those found on Windows, there are still some that might best be regarded as a "work-around" thus causing some Microsoft-tought IT IT personal to flinch... though not necesserally because it's a work-around but because its a work-around that is not for Windows.
