Why do you use Linux?

I was recently engaged in a similar discussion which reminded me of a situation in which I truly learned to appreciate Linux enabled technologies. Now, I could get all nostalgic and say, that it was so and so year and this was happening in mylife but truth be told, it was one specific event that truly highlighted the power and adaptability of the Linux kernel.

Going all in with Ceph

Many big names in the storage industry have been jumping on the Ceph train. Any why shouldn’t they? It does it all. Well, almost. Originally developed by Inktank and later acquired by Red Hat, Ceph is a software-defined scale-out data storage solution. It supports Object, Block, and File storage. It also exposes a RESTful API that supports both OpenStack and Amazon S3. What is there to not like about it?

Frustrations with the Linux SCSI Target (or SCST) software suite…

I have come to the realization that SCST definitely stood out as the most superior of the bunch and with good reason. It is also the most storage industry supported of iSCSI Target solutions. Acquired by Fusionio and now part of SanDisk, SCST continues to remain at the top of its SCSI Target competition. Although, with that said, I must note that it does come with its fair share of issues.

Reiser4 Now Availabel for the 3.15 kernel, so what?

A recent announcement was made stating that the Reiser4 file system, successor to the ReiserFS, was ported to the 3.15 Linux kernel. So, I ask you, how relevant is Reiser4? If you ask me, not very. I feel that this file system (among a few others) just needs to go away.

Canonical: A company in dire need of a clear objective.

Not all companies will make the right decision from the beginning, which is why you need to adapt in order to succeed, although how many bad decisions does a company need to make? Canonical has a long history in which some can say, they did not make the right choice. Let us take a look at some of these, shall we?

I would like to announce the release of RapidDisk 2.3. You can clone/pull it from the rxdsk-2.x git repo. It includes a minor bug fix to address a warning when building for Linux kernels 3.2 and up and some other cosmetic updates.
