Wal-Mart Stores, the world's largest retailer, has begun selling Microtel PCs that come with Sun Microsystems' version of the Linux operating system. "We are seriously considering Wal-Mart to be the PC supplier for Sun Microsystems," Jonathan Schwartz, head of Sun's software group, said in a meeting with reporters here Tuesday. Separately, he said an unnamed European bank is using Sun's Linux software for 10,000 tellers.

A vulnerability was discovered in squid version 2.5.STABLE4 and earlier with the processing of %-encoded characters in a URL. If a squid configuration uses ACLs (Access Control Lists), it is possible for a remote attacker to create URLs that would not be properly tested against squid's ACLs, potentially allowing clients to access URLs that would otherwise be disallowed.

Red Hat will face off against new competitor Novell with Enterprise Linux 4.0 and a full-fledged corporate desktop in 2005--but without a "traditional" channel program in place. A French court has approved MandrakeSoft's plan to exit bankruptcy protection, a boost that accompanies a return to profitability for the Linux seller. The court approved a plan under which liabilities of 4.1 million euros, or about $5 million, will be repaid to creditors over a nine-year period, MandrakeSoft said Tuesday.
A Linux-based antispam appliance that leverages artificial intelligence helped a Cox Communications ISP stamp out 95 percent of its spam, the company said.
