Yet that's not quite the whole story. A few small alternatives to IE are thriving, much like the first mammals running between the toes of slow-moving dinosaurs.

Linux can help you appreciate the simple things on your computer

I like Linux because it is stable, secure and cheap. About the only viable objection to running it on your home computer is that it lags behind Windows in available software...My own inclination, at least for initial experiments, is to forget about Windows compatibility and current programs, and use Linux applications as much as possible. You'll find Linux equivalents for most; for example, even though you can't run Kazaa, you'll find Limewire a more than adequate substitute. A useful list you'll find is at Tucows.com. Also note that games, while available, are fairly hopeless and dated.

While the folks at http://thelinuxbox.org were ironing out the logistical details of running their home desktop kit PC contest. They happened upon a Linux installer model http://thelinuxbox.org/Net_installer.html that could also help the GNU/Linux community generally. Raymond on the Linux Show http://www.thelinuxshow.com/archives/2004/tls-01-06-2004.mp3 (minute 31:50-35:00) that the various core distributions would all move to a dynamically upgradeable unified repositories model.
