Whoops.

I'm pretty boring in that regard ---

LXer --- hmmmm. Something subversive there dailykos --- And no, I am neither a Democrat nor liberal/progressive drudgereport --- GREAT hopping off point.

After that, it's a bunch of frequent destinations that may not be daily: Iraq Coalition Casualties, New York Times, Sports Illustrated, Linux Today and so on and so on

The LXer community — that's y'all — is a big part of this site's success, but another important factor is the design, philosophy and implementation of the Web site itself.

I find the way things are done here to be way more palatable than Digg, /. or any other site that aggregates content on a particular topic. From a strictly technical standpoint, it's a great example of the possibilities inherent in an interactive Web site powered by PHP and MySQL.

And I give this site most of the credit for whatever audience I've managed to attract at my own tech blog.

If there were clones of LXer for other topics of interest, I think they'd stand a chance of being equally successful — or more so.

Thank You Steven for the kind words, you sound like me talking about this place.

I am glad that I can count on you to vouch for a "LXer Effect" in having an article post to the newswire.. ;-)

I can vouch for the "LXer effect". My last article posted here boosted my traffic ten times in 24 hours, in part because several other news feeds picked it up from LXer (including discussion boards in Russia, Bulgaria, and Romania!). It's now the single most popular article on my site.

FWIW, LXer is the first bookmark listed in my "geek sites" sub-menu. And I keep an eye on the LT headlines from Linux Home Page dot com.

I have used my own not very scientific method and from what I can tell Google indexes us about every 8 to 10 minutes. At least that is how how long it takes for a newswire post to show up in their search results. That comes out to almost 180 times a day we are hit by them, not too shabby if you ask me.

Given that I write about Linux frequently, I actually have a list of 24 sites that I read every day. I will not bore you will the whole list, but here are a couple of my favorites that have not been mentioned:

Lifehacker - Huge volume of really interesting stuff, mostly non-Linux related, but still very interesting PolishLinux - Unfortunately, there has not been anything new here in a while, but their stuff, particularly the tours of KDE releases is really interesting.

Most of the other stuff is either not that interested or has already been mentioned.

I can't say I read it every day, but Shuttleworth's blog is definitely worth checking out. (Of course, just about every post gets picked up by every Linux site on earth, so you generally know where there is something new to read.)

Ah, you're a GTD man eh? I read Lifehacker occasionally. It's quite good.

Also, a few other sites that I read. Not daily, but whenever there is something new:

A List Apart (http://alistapart.com/): A web designer magazine Simplebits, by Dan Cederholm (http://simplebits.com/): He makes great web designs. I love his stuff. Web Design from Scratch, by Ben Hunt (http://www.webdesignfromscratch.com/), sadly not updated much these days Bastard operator from Hell (http://www.theregister.co.uk/odds/bofh/): Because I want to be like Simon (don't we all?) :-)

One that I forgot to mention is codinghorror.com. He's never really bought into FOSS, but he is intelligent enough to discuss related issues without being a troll/flamer. Plus his programming posts are informative.

Nobody above has mentioned Schestowitz's Boycott Novell site, and probably for good reason based upon other current LXer threads.

Also interesting that Penguin Pete's pro-FOSS site, http://penguinpetes.com/index.php , gets no mention here. Guess that many of the LXer "old guard" still resent Penguin Pete for his whistleblowing on helios's Tux500 fundraising affair less than two years ago. That's too bad.... still plenty of good nuggets of useful FOSS-wisdom around at PP's site, and available for all to benefit from without the constant need for PP to resort to ad hominum remarks.

I really hope that there were sarcasm tags on that whistle blowing comment.

Pete asked LXer to stay away from him, publicly. It's in a forum thread around here somewhere.

There was plenty of noise from PPete, all right, but nothing more. If Ken ran a scam PPete was miles away from offering any actual evidence. 'Whistle blowing' is an apt description, since his anti-Ken rants contained about as much substance as a whistle-blow.

azerthoth, you might remember how after PPete told LXerers to take a hike, and censored everyone who posted something on his site that he didn't like, that didn't stop him from continuing to post flames here.

Moreover, he blocked referrers from LXer, so we couldn't even link to his site; and he even blocked IP's of some of us.

I read mostly Dutch sites; but not all of them; Wikipedia, mostly English one, but sometimes I prefer to read something in Dutch, French or German. Can't believe I'm the first to mention! tweakers.net (Dutch, can be compared to heise.de; I don't know of an English equivalent though) nu.nl (Dutch most popular newssite; offering a special on Open Source last month!) google.maps.com (use that a lot for finding my way) cuil.com (not much; alternative for Google?) our intranet site at work, because it's the start page (doh!)

Not daily, but often: gentoo.org distrowatch.org noorderlicht.vpro.nl (Dutch, science) lxer.com/411/ standards blog When I'm bored; Uncyclopedia (TIP!) Greatest actually useful Linux/FSF/GNU rants ever: http://modeemi.fi/~tuomov/b/archives/ ; more people should read this; valid rants! Especially the 'these on free software', is a must read for any Linux / Free Software /Open source fan: http://modeemi.fi/~tuomov/b/archives/2007/06/01/T19_09_43/

Used to go there often, but not anymore: howstuffworks.com dmoz.org (still a great one) tldp.org

... and also not every day but certainly today (being an odd-numbered day); PP's new 'Doomed to Obscurity' comic strip, http://www.penguinpetes.com/Doomed_to_Obscurity/index.php Seems to be somewhat similar in tone to the popular strip UserFriendly, which the fourth, fifth, and seventh commentators in this thread have already mentioned they also visit on a daily basis.

Perhaps as no surprise here, Craigslist too, http://www.craigslist.org (New Zealand's mega-CL site is http://geo.craigslist.org/iso/au, just in case the author of the quote here is not already aware of this)

Other than LXer? The story sites that LXer links, various sites on the work intranet, gmail, and wunderground.com.

However I spend alot of time on LXer.

Other than LXer, well obviously, and as much as "many" might seem a good answer, I'll put in the few that I try to check every day specifically.

User Friendly, Dilbert, doesn't everyone? Here are a couple other comics that I haven't seen in other lists yet, Dreamland Chronicles: http://www.thedreamlandchronicles.com/ FreeFall: http://freefall.purrsia.com/default.htm

Two serials from Big Head Press I'm following right now, Odysseus The Rebel: http://www.bigheadpress.com/otr Escape from Terra: http://www.bigheadpress.com/eft

For more serious stuff, The Ludwig von Mises Institute (economic facts): http://www.mises.org/ Lew Rockwell (economic/political opinions): http://www.lewrockwell.com/ Linux Today: http://linuxtoday.com/ The Weather Channel: http://www.weather.com/

A few serious YouTube channels as well: http://www.youtube.com/user/FutureFreedomF http://www.youtube.com/user/misesmedia http://www.youtube.com/user/RidleyReport http://www.youtube.com/user/campaignforliberty http://www.youtube.com/user/pennsays (did I say serious? How did that last one get in there....)

I'll often check to see if there's a deal I just can't pass up: Gun Broker: http://www.gunbroker.com/

And the weeklies, The Libertarian Enterprise: http://www.ncc-1776.org/ Vin Suprynowicz: http://www.lvrj.com/columnists/Vin_Suprynowicz.html Future of Freedom Foundation: http://www.fff.org/whatsNew/index.asp

For daily news, though, I get the email version of Rational Review News. I cannot imagine trying to parse a newspaper any more, nor do I want to deal with the COST! http://www.rationalreview.com/news
