Foresight Linux 1.0 Kids Edition ScreenShots, Linux built for learning

I finally found a good Linux Distribution for kids. My daughter who is turning 5 soon completely loved the learning games on Foresight, especially TuxTyping. I highly recommend this OS for us Linux Geeks that have kids. It has a nice set of learning games, fun to play games, OpenOffice, and more. I just feel it is lacking a good proxy wizard so that kids are not allowed to hit certain sites. I feel any distro targeted at kids and learning should have a great proxy wizard. Well I hope you enjoy the screenshots below.

PCBSD 7.0 ScreenShots, Professional and Clean but can it compare to current Linux Distributions?

This is Linux Dynasty's first review of any BSD flavor out there. Now I'm pretty new to the BSD scene, so I will not talk much about this distro except for the fact that it was quite easy to install and the installer looked quite professional. I personally have much to learn about BSD's port system, well BSD in general! I might give it a whirl but not probably with PCBSD. I do want to use OpenBSD but as a server system and maybe try FreeBSD for my desktop ( We will see what happens ).

HowTo FIX that annoying NIC reordering that VMWare ESX 3.+ does to you..

Once we moved to VMWare ESX 3.+ we ran into a very annoying issue. The issue was that if you have multiple NICs from Multiple vendors, VMWare will reorder your NICs and cause havoc to you guys who use PXE boot/Kickstart. So I had to come with a work around that will alleviate this issue. I went ahead and created this script and I injected it in the post section of our kickstart profile and had it run after rebooting 3 times. Since After the third reboot the VMWare is done with its configuration, after the third reboot the script will run and then delete itself. Once all said and done your NICs will be in the proper order.

HowTo Collect Traffic Stats from Akamai using Perl

In order to graph the traffic from Akamai, I used to use MRTG calling a PERL/SOAP script which retrieved and combined the data from multiple cpcodes. This proved to be quite inefficient as each combination meant a separate SOAP call. I had thought about injecting the data into Zenoss, but the nature of that project dealt more with SNMP and simple commands and was not the ideal recipient of a multi-faceted SOAP retrieval mechanism. I finally got a chance to rewrite it this year as a perl script which connects to Akamai, acquires ALL the cpcodes for a particular login and, based on the cpcode name prefix, organizes the data by creating/updating RRD files and graphing them as PNG images (as well as creating MRTG-like HTML files).

OpenSuse 11.1 Beta 2 KDE Live ScreenShots

I must say I have always loved SUSE for the desktop, but after a month or so I always wind up switching back to Ubuntu or Ubuntu based Distributions. Now OpenSuse always maintains it's beautiful look as always as well as the infamous YAST tool. In the end of this install it failed trying to install GRUB, since this is in Beta I would have to assume this is a bug but none the less OpenSuse is a great OS. Enjoy the ScreenShots below.

HowTo Remaster a LiveCD or LiveDVD using SLAX

The other day I had to come up with a way to transfer a Solaris Express nv97 DVD 3G image to remote locations while not using the network. The reason for this is, I needed to perform a LiveUpgrade on over 700 boxes and each being at a different locations. So I said to myself I guess I can put this image on a custom LiveDVD... But then I said to myself, which Linux LiveCD/DVD distro will I use???? It has to be small enough so that I can fit the Solaris Express nv97 image as well as the LiveCD Image.

gOS 3.0 Gadgets ScreenShots, Looks like a MAC with Google Gadgets everywhere... :)

I could not believe that gOS 3.0 was a Linux Distro when I saw it on DistroWatch. So I said why not let me give it a try. Let me tell you I am glad I did! This distro is amazingly fast and extremely easy to use. This distro is perfect for the Asus EEEpc, especially for newbies just joining Linux or for users who are just tired of Microsoft Windows. The apps are easy to use as they are on my MAC. The fact that gOS makes extremely good use of Wine 1.0 which make it easy to install Windows Applications. The install was quick and simple, which is very important for people just joining the Linux Community. Well I hope you enjoy the installation ScreenShots below as well as some action shots.

Basics 101: ruby python bash perl expect php, How do the exact same thing in the 6 languages!

Watch as a red snake breaks open an oyster anticipating a new designer drug...no, that's not what that title means. Actually, this is a scripting tutorial of some basic methods like getopts, variable manipulation, output formatting, conditionals and functions/subroutines. Scripting languages translate very much like Romance Languages --- usually the quickest way to learn a second one is to simply translate your knowledge of the first one. A year ago, I had written a Zenoss-v1 device script in python, perl and bash for a friend to adjust to python with his knowledge of perl.

Mandriva 2009 RC2 ScreenShots

For you Microsoft Windows Users, I think I feel I finally found a Linux OS that I can say that my wife will use and not get confused..... I had her using this distro for a couple of hours and she really enjoyed it except that it is missing the Ubuntu Fire Fox plugin that makes installing plugins so easy :(. But Mandriva's Control Panel is so like Windows Control Panel so Windows users do not fret and feel safe using Mandriva.
