Managing Log Files and More With Elastic Stack

Managing log files is becoming increasingly harder with growing amounts of data and differing file formats. Giovanni Bechis, in his upcoming talk at LinuxCon Europe, describes a solution using the ELK stack (ElasticSearch, Logstash, Kibana), which he says let's you easily collect, parse, and manage log files from different sources.

For this other project, I wanted to cobble together a version of grep that let me specify proper regular expressions without having to worry about the -E flag and get a context for the matches too.

Florida Man Charged With Hacking Linux Servers

Austin is charged with causing damage to four servers located in the Bay Area by installing malicious software. Specifically, he is alleged to have gained unauthorized access to the four servers by using the credentials of an individual associated with the Linux Kernel Organization. According to the indictment, Austin used that access to install rootkit and trojan software, as well as to make other changes to the servers. Austin is charged with four counts of intentional transmission causing damage to a protected computer... If convicted, the defendant faces a maximum sentence of ten years of imprisonment, and a fine of $250,000, plus restitution...
