DistroWatch reports - Arch Linux 0.7.2 (Gimmick) is now available for download.Gimmick is the first official release to have the new modular X.Org 7.0 and GNOME 2.14, as well as KDE 3.5 available in a "stable" repository. DistroWatch states - The Ubuntu team is proud to announce the Release Candidate for version 6.06 LTS of Ubuntu, Kubuntu and Edubuntu - codenamed 'Dapper Drake'. The Release Candidates includes installable live Desktop CDs, server images, alternate text-mode installation CDs and an upgrade wizard for users of the current stable release. Limp-vkk-ver1.sourceforge.net reports - Linux Multimedia Player is a tiny Linux-based Live distribution that converts your computer into a multimedia player. It supports most of the known formats (MPEG 1 and 2, DivX, WMV, qt-mov, Real, MP3, WAV, WMA, and Ogg, VCD and DVD). It has auto-detection of harddisk (IDE, SATA, or SCSI) and sound, video, and network cards, USB storage device and supports all cards as of kernel 2.6.15. It identifies the filesystems and mounts them in the folder “START”.

Kaboot.ainkaboot.co.uk states - Kaboot Linux Operating system aims to provide an operating system which you can take anywhere and has all your favourite programs on. Available as a Live CD or Live USB you can take with you anywhere. A number of different versions are available, two optimised for size or speed, one for functionality, and one science based. All containing a host of useful programs able to boot virtually any computer (meeting the minimum requirements) from CD and USB.

DistroWatch reports - Tollef Fog Heen has announced that the seventh alpha ("Flight") releases of Ubuntu, Kubuntu and Xubuntu 6.06 "Dapper Drake" are now ready for testing: "Flight 7, the latest alpha of Dapper Drake, is now available. Notable changes include: crashes in the Live CD installer have been fixed; file systems are now mounted in the right order, which fixes GRUB installation with a separate /boot partition; leading and trailing spaces in passwords now work properly." DistroWatch reports - Frenzy is a small FreeBSD-based live CD with a good collection of security and penetration testing tools. After several months of delays and fundraising, the project has now announced the first beta release of the upcoming version 1.0. The new Frenzy is based on a pre-release version of FreeBSD 6.1, includes an improved hard disk installer, language options, an option to load the entire system into RAM disk, various methods to monitor disk activity, several new configuration tools, a new backup mechanism, an installer for USB storage devices, a stress testing utility, and many other updates.

DistroWatch reports - The release candidate of dyne:II is out. In this 2.0 version there is a lot more than 1.0, it will take a while for me to write complete documentation about all the features, but let's go on and see what happens. In particular this release solves all problems with nesting, Unionfs for writable /usr, PCMCIA automatic recognition and... runs on Apple's new Intel based machines (docking and booting from CD with bootcamp). DistroWatch reports - The Ubuntu, Kubuntu and Edubuntu teams are proud to present a second beta release of Ubuntu / Kubuntu / Edubuntu 6.06 LTS, codenamed 'Dapper Drake'. This release corrects some serious flaws in the installer present on the Desktop CD in the first beta release. Although the text-mode install CD also forms part of this release, it has not been modified since Beta 1.

DistroWatch reports - The Damn Small Linux project has released the first development build of DSL-N (Damn Small Linux Not), an enhanced live CD based on Damn Small Linux, but not limited to 50MB in size. Besides the usual base applications found in Damn Small Linux, DSL-N also includes the Mozilla suite, MPlayer, AbiWord, Gnumeric, Leafpad, Gaim, CUPS and a number of other popular software packages. It is powered by kernel 2.6.11 with Unionfs support available as an optional boot parameter. DSL-N is not designed to replace Damn Small Linux; instead it is intended for different set of tasks or perhaps for a slightly more demanding user.

DistroWatch reports - Texstar has announced the first release of the "MiniME" edition of PCLinuxOS 0.93, a minimal and customisable desktop system with KDE: "PCLinuxOS 0.93 MiniME is available for download and testing. This release is for those who have been asking for a minimum live CD / hard disk install allowing for full personalization. This release includes 2.6.15-oci3 kernel, basic KDE 3.5.2 desktop (kdebase and kdelibs only), PCLOS Control Center, the Synaptic software installer and a customized X.Org server from Thac to provide additional 3D support for many graphic cards.

DistroWatch reports - Jani Monoses has announced the first public beta release of Xubuntu, the latest addition of the growing tree of Ubuntu derivatives: "We are pleased to announce that the first public beta release of Xubuntu, the latest official addition to the Ubuntu family of derivative distributions has arrived. Xubuntu is built around the solid Ubuntu core and the friendly and relatively light-weight XFce desktop environment, with the specific goal of providing a nice user experience even on older hardware. This release includes a recent code snapshot of the upcoming XFce 4.4 desktop environment.

DistroWatch reports - MEPIS founder Warren Woodford has announced the alpha2 release of SimplyMEPIS 6.0. Alpha2 primarily incorporates suggestions from the MEPIS user community and package updates. For example, the Utilities and Development menus have been reorganized. To reduce the clutter in SystemSettings, the input device configurations have been placed in a submenu.

DistroWatch reports - The Ubuntu team is proud to announce the Beta Release of Ubuntu 6.06 LTS - codenamed 'Dapper Drake'. The Beta Release introduces the new Desktop CD, which can be used both to try Ubuntu 'live' and to install the system. Ubuntu 6.06 LTS (long-term support) will be the first Ubuntu release to be supported for three years on the desktop, and five years on the server.

DistroWatch reports - StartCom Enterprise Linux 3.0.5 has been released. This is the latest in the series of updated releases based on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3. What's new? StartCom made a strategic switch concerning the update mechanism and all current and future operating systems will receive their updates via the new YUM. Other changes and additions for AS-3.0.5 are full support for smart cards from the OpenSC project, addition of Firefox and Thunderbird (both 1.5 versions) with the natural support for the StartCom Free SSL Certification Authority, but also some 300 other updated packages.

DistroWatch reports - A beta livecd version 0.85 of Phaeronix is now available. It is a Gentoo-based RR4 CD optimised for i686, with GNOME, Reiser4-enabled GRUB and automatic hardware detection.

OSNews reports - Normally only paid members get to beta test future Linspire releases, but the Italian branch of Linspire has opened the Italian beta program for Linspire 5.1 for everyone. Now, the catch obviously is that, well, everything's Italian, but with some guesswork and a dictionary you'll get there. Italian has a good one-to-one correspondence between vowels/consonants and sounds, so pronunciation shouldn't be too hard.

nUbuntu.org reports - The main goal of nUbuntu is to create a distribution which is derived from the Ubuntu distribution, and add packages related to security testing, and remove unneeded packages, such as Gnome, Openoffice.org, and Evolution.
