Mac guru and software developer Mark Pilgrim recently switched to Ubuntu Linux after becoming fed up with proprietary Mac file-formats and the increasing use of DRM technologies in the MacOS. I've been a Mac user since 1984, and have a Mac tattooed on my right bicep. I've probably personally owned 50 Macs, and I've purchased several hundred while working as an IT manager over the years. I'm about to make the same switch, for much the same reasons.

Last week was a slow one - among the major distributions, only Novell provided some excitement with the first public development release of SUSE Linux Enterprise 10. Several smaller distributions also continued their work - the SME Server project has finally released its long-awaited version 7.0, while a new and excellent live CD edition of Zenwalk Linux also made its first appearance last week. In other news, Smart for SUSE Linux and DesktopBSD's new package management tool are the focus of the news section, while the first look part of DistroWatch Weekly brings a short review of Frenzy 1.0, an excellent live CD based on FreeBSD. luny has reported a vulnerability in PHP/MySQL Classifieds Script, which can be exploited by malicious users to conduct script insertion attacks. Input passed to the "Title", "URL" and "Description" form field parameters in AddAsset1.php is not properly sanitised before being used. This can be exploited to insert arbitrary HTML and script code, which will be executed in a user's browser session in context of an affected site when malicious data is viewed.

Network vendors promote Linux for carrier networks

The SCOPE Alliance, a grouping of major telecoms networking equipment vendors, has published a profile for a carrier-grade Linux operating system. The profile builds on the Open Source Development Labs (OSDL) carrier-grade Linux requirements definition version 3.2 (CGL 3.2). It describes a subset of the mandatory CGL 3.2 features and prioritises the CGL 3.2 'roadmap' items that SCOPE deems necessary to support carrier-grade base platforms for network equipment providers.
