DistroWatch states - I'd like to let you know that a release candidate of SLAX 5.1.7 is out. This version contains a few major feature updates. The most important features include: modified 'changes=' cheatcode to accept device names with path; added 'fromiso' cheatcode to load CD data from a different ISO image. Also new in this release, the Linux kernel has been upgraded to version 2.6.16.20 with SMP support, while KDE has been upgraded to version 3.5.3 and KOffice to 1.5.1. DistroWatch states - MEPIS has released beta 5, the final beta, of SimplyMEPIS 6.0. Beta 5 includes a few changes in applications and components. Lame, 915resolution, and VMware kernel support were added to the bootable / installable CD. Acpi-support and klaptop have been replaced by kpowersave. This has resulted in reports of better out-of-the-box suspend-to-ram and suspend-to-disk functionality for laptops.

VLOS 1.3 Beta 1 Screenshot Tour

DistroWatch reports - After a series of alpha releases, the first beta of the Gentoo-based VLOS 1.3 has been released. The new release includes a number of major changes, such as improvements to the Gentoo port of Anaconda and new Mono-based applications, including Beagle, F-Spot and Banshee. It also comes with a modular X.Org 7.0 and uses 'gnome-mount' for mounting external storage devices. Among applications, GNOME has been upgraded to version 2.14.1 and KDE to 3.5.2. Limp-vkk-ver1.sourceforge.net reports - Linux Multimedia Player is a tiny Linux-based Live distribution that converts your computer into a multimedia player. It supports most of the known formats (MPEG 1 and 2, DivX, WMV, qt-mov, Real, MP3, WAV, WMA, and Ogg, VCD and DVD). It has auto-detection of harddisk (IDE, SATA, or SCSI) and sound, video, and network cards, USB storage device and supports all cards as of kernel 2.6.15. It identifies the filesystems and mounts them in the folder “START”.

Notable changes include: crashes in the Live CD installer have been fixed; file systems are now mounted in the right order, which fixes GRUB installation with a separate /boot partition; leading and trailing spaces in passwords now work properly." Frenzy BSD 1.0 Beta 1 Screenshot Tour

DistroWatch reports - Frenzy is a small FreeBSD-based live CD with a good collection of security and penetration testing tools. After several months of delays and fundraising, the project has now announced the first beta release of the upcoming version 1.0. The new Frenzy is based on a pre-release version of FreeBSD 6.1, includes an improved hard disk installer, language options, an option to load the entire system into RAM disk, various methods to monitor disk activity, several new configuration tools, a new backup mechanism, an installer for USB storage devices, a stress testing utility, and many other updates.

DistroWatch reports - The release candidate of dyne:II is out. In this 2.0 version there is a lot more than 1.0, it will take a while for me to write complete documentation about all the features, but let's go on and see what happens. In particular this release solves all problems with nesting, Unionfs for writable /usr, PCMCIA automatic recognition and... runs on Apple's new Intel based machines (docking and booting from CD with bootcamp). Ubuntu 6.06 Beta 2 Screenshot Tour

DistroWatch reports - The Ubuntu, Kubuntu and Edubuntu teams are proud to present a second beta release of Ubuntu / Kubuntu / Edubuntu 6.06 LTS, codenamed 'Dapper Drake'. This release corrects some serious flaws in the installer present on the Desktop CD in the first beta release. Although the text-mode install CD also forms part of this release, it has not been modified since Beta 1.
