DSL-Not 0.1 Alpha Screenshot Tour

DistroWatch reports - The Damn Small Linux project has released the first development build of DSL-N (Damn Small Linux Not), an enhanced live CD based on Damn Small Linux, but not limited to 50MB in size. Besides the usual base applications found in Damn Small Linux, DSL-N also includes the Mozilla suite, MPlayer, AbiWord, Gnumeric, Leafpad, Gaim, CUPS and a number of other popular software packages. It is powered by kernel 2.6.11 with Unionfs support available as an optional boot parameter. DSL-N is not designed to replace Damn Small Linux; instead it is intended for different set of tasks or perhaps for a slightly more demanding user.

PCLinuxOS 0.93 MiniME Screenshot Tour

DistroWatch reports - Texstar has announced the first release of the "MiniME" edition of PCLinuxOS 0.93, a minimal and customisable desktop system with KDE: "PCLinuxOS 0.93 MiniME is available for download and testing. This release is for those who have been asking for a minimum live CD / hard disk install allowing for full personalization. This release includes 2.6.15-oci3 kernel, basic KDE 3.5.2 desktop (kdebase and kdelibs only), PCLOS Control Center, the Synaptic software installer and a customized X.Org server from Thac to provide additional 3D support for many graphic cards.

Xubuntu 6.06 Beta Screenshot Tour

DistroWatch reports - Jani Monoses has announced the first public beta release of Xubuntu, the latest addition of the growing tree of Ubuntu derivatives: "We are pleased to announce that the first public beta release of Xubuntu, the latest official addition to the Ubuntu family of derivative distributions has arrived. Xubuntu is built around the solid Ubuntu core and the friendly and relatively light-weight XFce desktop environment, with the specific goal of providing a nice user experience even on older hardware. This release includes a recent code snapshot of the upcoming XFce 4.4 desktop environment.

SimplyMEPIS 6.0 Alpha 2 Screenshot Tour

DistroWatch reports - MEPIS founder Warren Woodford has announced the alpha2 release of SimplyMEPIS 6.0. Alpha2 primarily incorporates suggestions from the MEPIS user community and package updates. For example, the Utilities and Development menus have been reorganized. To reduce the clutter in SystemSettings, the input device configurations have been placed in a submenu.

DistroWatch reports - The Ubuntu team is proud to announce the Beta Release of Ubuntu 6.06 LTS - codenamed 'Dapper Drake'. The Beta Release introduces the new Desktop CD, which can be used both to try Ubuntu 'live' and to install the system. Ubuntu 6.06 LTS (long-term support) will be the first Ubuntu release to be supported for three years on the desktop, and five years on the server.

StartCom EL 3.0.5 Screenshot Tour

DistroWatch reports - StartCom Enterprise Linux 3.0.5 has been released. This is the latest in the series of updated releases based on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3. What's new? StartCom made a strategic switch concerning the update mechanism and all current and future operating systems will receive their updates via the new YUM. Other changes and additions for AS-3.0.5 are full support for smart cards from the OpenSC project, addition of Firefox and Thunderbird (both 1.5 versions) with the natural support for the StartCom Free SSL Certification Authority, but also some 300 other updated packages.

Linspire 5.1.365 (Italian) Screenshot Tour

OSNews reports - Normally only paid members get to beta test future Linspire releases, but the Italian branch of Linspire has opened the Italian beta program for Linspire 5.1 for everyone. Now, the catch obviously is that, well, everything's Italian, but with some guesswork and a dictionary you'll get there. Italian has a good one-to-one correspondence between vowels/consonants and sounds, so pronunciation shouldn't be too hard.
